Sumario:In April 2003, an incident occurred in the parish of Papallacta, where part of the pipeline that carried crude oil from Shushufindi to Esmeraldas was broken by the passage of machinery over the high pressure pipe. This caused the spill of 13,000 barrels of crude oil in the area that is inside the Cayambe Coca reserve. Therefore, the current situation of contamination by vertical electric sounding will be determined, which is an electronic geophysical methodology to obtain the resistivity of the measurement objects, in this case, the soil layers. A Schlumberger arrangement with two equipments was used to measure the resistivity, obtaining data at the spill site and in a place without contamination in order to compare the measurements. It was determined that the study site has an environmental passive at 40 meters of soil depth, in a layer of compacted plastic clay that has a resistivity of 2000 ohm-m and with this a model was made to represent the movement of the particles in the zone by the corresponding strata. It is necessary to maintain several prevention techniques, as well as remediation in this type of activities, since in case of an accident such as the one studied, the environmental impact is too broad and difficult to counteract. That is why the importance of the thesis lies in the measurement and determination of the environmental liability given by a bad remediation of the spill and the lack of prevention and mitigation measures.
