Sumario:It is considered premature, a baby born alive before they have completed 37 weeks of gestation. Proper nutrition after birth and during their first years of life is essential to achieve an adequate growth, nutritional status and health for the rest of their lives. This literature review is a descriptive study, and its purpose was to analyze the nutrition supplied in the premature newborn infants in Ecuador and Latin America, in addition, to compare the different policies and programs that support an adequate nutrition in these infants. It has been established several ways and methods of feeding the premature newborn, nevertheless the best option that should be given to these infants is fortified human milk, not only for all the benefits at the prevention of specific diseases, but also for their quality as to the optimal development and catch up growth they need to achieve.Nowadays, in Ecuador, the nutrition of a premature new born, does not include fortified human milk, this is because there are no specific manuals, policies, laws or programs which govern and support the ideal nutrition for these infants, while they are still receiving artificial milks exclusive for preterm, this doesn’t happen in other countries like Chile, Argentina, Colombia and México where there are specific regulations for premature infants.
