Sumario:A thermodynamic approach has been recently developed to assess the fatigue behaviour of materials, considering that this mode of failure is a degradation process resulting on the generation of entropy due to plastic deformation, heat transfer and other irreversibilities. Several works have been done to validate the theoretical framework with experimental observations, based on the determination of entropy generation. A numerical model using a FEM-based commercial package is developed in this study, in order to determine the mechanical and thermal response of an element subjected to cyclic loads. The model is validated by comparing the gathered numerical data with published experimental results for aluminium 6061-T6 under different loading amplitudes. The thermodynamic and mechanical framework, as well as computational issues to model the phenomenon are discussed in this paper.
