The reference population should be given instructions on cleaning and disinfection of particular water supply and storage systems if they exist, and the cleaning and repair of septic tanks or other sewage mechanisms should be promoted. La mayoría de las personas con fiebre tifoidea se siente mejor a los pocos días del inicio del tratamiento con antibióticos, aunque una cantidad reducida de ellas puede morir por complicaciones. El agua potable debe ser purificada, las aguas servidas deben eliminarse de forma eficaz, y la leche debe pasteurizarse. Los portadores crónicos deben evitar la manipulación de alimentos y no deben cuidar a pacientes o a niños pequeños; hay que implementar precauciones de aislamiento adecuadas de los pacientes.
